I have a new boss, Biggles, pictured above. Now that I essentially work alone, my hardest task will be keep myself motivated and moving forward with the game. Hopefully Biggles will work hard to keep me in line.
Over the past few weeks enforced furlough (due to a country move) work habits have lain dormant and may require some effort to restart. I have put some thoughts into how to best get myself back into the swing of work. I have a long todo list. Starting tomorrow I will keep a long of hours worked. Both practices have worked for me before. Now I will add a third – Biggles.
A podcast on problem solving suggested talking through technical issues with a friend. It suggested that just the act of organising one’s thoughts enough to verbally explain them often resulted in the solution becoming clear – without the need for the friend to offer any input at all. As many a past harangued workmate will attest, this is a technique that works for me. The podcast then went further to suggest that if you work alone, you just talk to a fluffy toy instead. Aha, I hadn’t thought of that before, but it seems like it might work. Thus Biggles was born.
Biggles has two jobs. Firstly, as the podcast suggested, Biggles will be the “workmate” with whom I discuss my technical problems (I’m not sure how useful Biggles will be with personal issues). Secondly, I now consider Biggles my boss to whom I have to justify any breaks or slow work. Biggles’ desk sits next to mine with his slightly disappointed gaze always upon me. Hopefully it will make getting the job done in isolation easier – let’s see.
